October Meeting: Pot Luck Dinner

Our first meeting of the ORT year will be Tuesday, Oct. 17th at 6:30 p.m. We will have a pot-luck dinner at Wendy Fotland's house. Call (408) 985-1236 or email Wendy to R.S.V.P. and get directions and an address. View map and directions

Please bring whatever you want (vegetarian or dairy). New and potential members are very welcome to the meeting. We will have the ORT Visionaries video to show, but our main objectives will be to eat, sign up for gift wrap shifts, and have fun!

Help Wanted

We are still looking for volunteers! Positions open include bulletin editor, financial secretary and donor chair. We will train! We need a bulletin editor by November so the interim editor, Wendy Fotland, doesn't lose her mind! Please contact Hayley Green Smith, (650) 780-9223, to volunteer.

The gift wrap committee is always looking for people to help with phone calls, set up, etc. Please call Susan Hertzberg, (408) 961-9441, to volunteer or go to our Gift wrap page for further details and to sign up online.

Entertainment Books A Better Deal Than Ever

Entertainment Books are only $20 this year! They still contain hundreds o coupons for half-off on almost everything. What they don't have is coupons for places outside our area, like San Farncisco and Monterey. The new book is also printed on thinner paper, which means it is lighter and slimmer.

All your favorites are still here, including Uno's, The Red Pepper, The Good Earth, Florentine's, Sundance Mine Company, AMC Theaters, The Tech Museum, Bamboola, The San Jose Rep, Continental Airlines and many more. It's an incredible bargain! Buy one for yourself and some more for gifts.

Wendy has books right now for San Jose, San Francisco, & Monterey. Call if you need other Bay Area or even out-of-state books.

With this great price, we should be able to sell even more books than last year. (And we make less monet on each one, so we need to sell more than last year!) Get yours at the Oct. 17th meeting, or call Wendy (408-985-1236) to arrange a pick up. Act now, before your neighbor buys one from someone else!

Gift Wrap Needs You!

Gift Wrap is still our biggest annual fundraiser. We are wrapping at Valley Fair Mall from the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 24) to Christmas Eve. We will also provide the free wrapping for Westfield Works Wonders on Sunday, Nov. 19., but we don't have to be open for the week in between.

Bug gift wrap won't be a success without your help! We need everyone to volunteer for as many shifts as they can. (Shifts are generally three to four hours long.) Please call Wendy Fotland (408-985-1236) or view our current schedule and sign up online at our Gift Wrap page.

Our afternoon shifts usually 1 to 4 P.M. and 4 to 7 p.m., are always the hardest to fill. If you can possibly work some of these, please help us out! Maybe your kids can get a ride home with someone else one day, or Dad can take care of dinner. Gift wrap is only four weeks long, so please consider making special arrangements for ORT one or two days a week. It may be inconvenient, but please think of our students who need our help.

Wrappers will receive honor roll credit for their hours, based upon how much money we earn. Callers and ORT member baby-sitters also get credit for their time.

ORT will be joined this year by Beth David SIsterhood, The Ladies of the Moose, Brandeis Women, The Prospect High Key Club and the Imperial Royal Lion Monarchy of San Jose. Without their help, we couldn't fill our booth!

If your talents do not include wrapping beautiful packages, we can always use people to help make calls, or set up or tear down the booth. Cash donations are also cheerfully accepted!

Make Your Own Gifts at Petroglyph

Just in time for the holidays, ORT is holding its second-annual event at Petroglyph on Monday, Nov. 13th from 7 to 9 p.m. Ceramic items to paint include plates, teapots, trivets, vases, small figurines, etc. Make one for yourself or for a gift! Light refreshments will be provided.

View some beautiful pieces from last year's Petroglyph event
This time we will be at the San Jose Petroglyph, at 1140 Lincoln, just south of Willow. (View map and driving directions)There is a parking lot right next to Jamba Juice.

Come and choose something to paint that night, or stop by Petroglyph any day and reserve a piece. They are open M–Th 12–9, F 12–10, Sat 11–10, Sun 11–7. If you reserve a piece, you can still change your mind that night. They should have some Judaica items closer to the holidays.

Petroglyph charges a $9.75 studio fee, plus teh cost of whatever you paint. Individual pieces range from $10 to $20 or $25. We are requesting a donation to ORT or $2 over each individual's cost. Bring the coupon from your Entertainment book!

Please R.S.V.P. to Wendy Fotland, (408-985-1236), by Nov. 6th.

Westfield Works Wonders

Once again, Westfield Works Wonders will be held at Valley Fair Mall the Sunday before Thanksgiving from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $5. The evening will includ refreshments, entertainment, prize drawings and discounts at many stores.

ORT keeps the proceeds from tickets we sell. Call Hayley Green Smith (650-780-9223) for tickets.

There will also be a free gift wrapping—that's us! Please call Wendy to volunteer for 7 to 8:30 or 8:30 to 10, leaving time to shop and eat, or visit our Gift wrap page to view a complete schedule for the season and sign up online. Last year we had a great time!

’99-’00 successful year for SVORT
By Susan Hertzberg

Our chapter topped of a really successful year with a beautiful and entertaining Honors Brunch. It was one of the premiere events ever sponsored by our chapter. But it was fitting to honor not only our hard-working and generous membership, but to single out some of the women responsible for bringing the ORT influence to the Silicon Valley. Sheila Gold-Kessler, Elaine Kahn, Bobi Levine, Rachel Levy, Naomi Roman, Diane Rauchwerger, Lil Schwartzberg, and Rebecca Wilheim helped start something special in this valley a little more than 30 years ago as part of a growing concept that, given the tools, people can be productive, useful members of their society.

It is your turn to continue the work. We need your help to support ORT's Programs. Our biggest, best, most rewarding fundraiser is Gift Wrap: sign up now, don't wait! This year we need your support more than ever as the new mall management is charging a fee for space. The more hands we can get into the booth the more we can wrap. It is sad when people walk away because the line is too long.

We are also seeking corporate sponsorship. There are huge untapped resources in this valley, and if you work for one of those companies that make this valley great, perhaps they would like to sponsor a company gift wrap event. Call Wendy or Susan for details.

We have a great membership and every year we call on you to help and so many do. The call is the same—the need is greater. Volunteer early so you can enjoy the good feeling of making a difference in the life of someone who needs a chance.
